Radio

A Lifetime Hobby
I have had an interest in various aspects of radio all of my life.

1940-1960
We got our first television when I was 8 or 9. So my prized possession before that was my very own AM radio. From Superman and Captain Midnight to Gangbusters, radio made my imagination work overtime. I do vaguely remember when our small town got its own station, WCLT, at first only FM, in 1947.

I started out when I visited my Uncle George when I was a kid in Newark. He had a simple shortwave radio which absolutely fascinated me when we would go to his home to visit. This was just after WWII which I know he was in and believe he brought it back with him. I think he realized how much I enjoyed it and gave it to me at some point. I remember having it sometime after we moved to Cincinnati when I was 12.

During high school I got very much into police radio (sometimes could pick up Chicago) and a lot of SWL activity. I wrote to many foreign SW stations for QSLs and newsletters. Also while in high school, my Dad took me to visit a business acquaintance, my first contact with a ham. And he had the newest of equipment back in the 50's, Single Sideband (SSB).

1960 - Present
A few years later I made a friend in the college that we attended in southern Indiana and we studied together and got our licenses. I started out as WA9GRK in 1963. I learned to build transmitters. I also scrambled around on the dome of the school (pictured to the right when it was a hotel) putting up dipoles and long wire antennas.

While there I also chanced to find an early Westinghouse radio (pictured below) from the 1920's. I still have it and recently it was displayed as part of an exhibit at The Works, a museum in my hometown of Newark OH.

In the mid 60's I taught high school for three years in Indianapolis and ran (actually started) the school's radio club.

Returning to the Chicago area in the late 60's and early 70's i did a lot of DX operation at a club station and got very involved in 2 meter repeater operation which was just starting to take off.

After a long layoff from active ham radio activity, I have become a little active in the local radio scene. I have maintained my license since 1963 and have for some years held advanced class license KC8IA.
